Part 5: Introduction of Simulation to the Development Process of Insulin Pens

As a device development specialist at B&W, in this fifth post in our series, I would like to discuss the integration of simulation into the insulin pen development process. This strategy represents a real turning point, both for experienced developers and for those who are dealing with the subject matter for the first time. Before that, they should have read the previous parts of this series.

The path to simulation: step by step

Ideally, the introduction of a simulation starts with an understandable and manageable topic to promote basic understanding and maintain a clear overview. A startup project that is too complex can be a hindrance. Working with a partner who has already solved simple problems can provide reassuring support.

The key is in timing

If a product is in the process of being developed, simulation should be part of the process from the very beginning. Building a simulation model in parallel alongside physical prototyping makes it possible to understand the behavior of the product at an early stage and to continuously adapt the model. This parallelism ensures that problems that arise during the prototype phase can be detected and corrected in time without jeopardizing the market launch date.

The introduction of virtual verification can also be beneficial for products that are already on the market. Here we can then draw on a wealth of verification data to calibrate and adapt our simulation. This recalibration is particularly valuable when adjustments are to be made to the product, such as the introduction of a new active ingredient with different physical properties.

Introducing simulation into the development process is a challenging but rewarding step. It requires careful planning and a willingness to invest in knowledge and partnerships. The reward is a deeper understanding of the product and more efficient development – a clear win for us at B&W and our customers.
